Two poems by Peter Holliday
RHUBARB, WOMBAT, LIGHTSWITCH
or, The Modern Prometheus
It was like that comet last year
(Did you hear about it?)
It missed us by a hair astronomically speaking
It missed you walking down my street
It went right by my house
It passed the stairs to my door
You came up the stairs
And it missed it all
And we were this close to heaven
But I never told you
It was like when you used to live with
Pam and Joe and Al and Mike and Barb and
Cigarettes and motorcycle parts and
Rebellion and youth
And we went on the roof
And I named a contellation after you
But I could never find it afterwards
It was like when we were spinning
5am Sunday morning by the old school
Arms wide open looking up
And spinning and spinning and spinning
It was all arms and legs and dirt
Under the bridge and you didn't mind
And spinning
And it all came out of the middle
And that's what it was like
